The process to apply for Canada PR can sometimes be a challenging task – especially for first timers. Are you planning on immigrating to Canada as a permanent resident? Don’t know where to start? Here are 8 easy steps you would need to follow to meet the eligibility for Canada PR under the Express Entry program. What is Express Entry? Launched back in 2015, Express Entry is Canada’s most sought-after pathway to apply for Canada PR. With a quick processing time of 6 months, Express Entry currently manages three economic immigration programs – the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Express Entry is a point-based system that ranks and evaluates candidates wanting to apply for Canada PR under factors such as Age, Education, Work Experience, Language Proficiency, Adaptability, Spousal Sponsorship, and Provincial Nomination. Eligible Express Entry candidates are placed in a pool, with other qualifying candidates. Here, candidates are assigned a score based on the same factors, under the CRS points calculator. Candidates with the highest scores in the CRS points calculator are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residency in a subsequent Express Entry draw. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts ITA rounds on a weekly basis – and does not release the details of the CRS cut-off score beforehand. An ideal Express Entry candidate would meet the following requirements:
STEP 1: Get your ECA done. To meet the eligibility for Canada PR, you would be required to get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) done. An ECA will evaluate and justify whether your academic credentials meet the Canadian standards. Popular ECA regulatory bodies include International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) and World Education Services (WES). STEP 2: Prepare for IELTS. To apply for Canada PR under the Express Entry system, you would need to have a minimum language proficiency of Canadian Benchmark Level (CLB) 7 – or a minimum of 6.0 in each section of the IELTS i.e., Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. As it takes 6 months to process Canada PR applications under the Express Entry, you should ensure that your IELTS test results are valid for the entire duration. STEP 3: Create an Express Entry profile. Visit the official Canada Immigration website, create an Express Entry profile, and fill in the application form. The information you provide in the Express Entry application, will be used to assign you a score in the Express Entry points grid. Submit your complete application. If eligible, you will be placed in the Express Entry pool, alongside other qualifying candidates. STEP 4: Calculate your CRS. Like we said above, the higher your CRS score, the more are your chances of successfully achieving Canadian permanent residency. Once in the pool, calculate your CRS score, and get an idea of your chances for receiving an ITA. Usually, a CRS score of 465+ is considered fair. Candidates with lower scores also have options to boost their points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). STEP 5: Invitation to Apply (ITA). The IRCC will now conduct draws on a weekly basis – issuing ITAs to candidates with the highest CRS scores. Once having acquired your ITA, it is now time to apply for Canada PR. STEP 6: Apply for Canada PR. Complete your Canada PR application (accurately) and pay the mandated processing fee. You will also be asked to provide the following supporting documents to meet the eligibility for Canada PR:
The IRCC will now review your Canada PR application alongside the documents you have provided. If successful, the IRCC will send you a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR). This step may take another 2-3 months, besides the standard Express Entry processing time of 6 months. STEP 8: Medical and Police Clearance. This is the final step to meet the eligibility for Canada PR. First, to prove that you are in good condition to immigrate to Canada, you would be asked to submit a Medical Clearance report. Furthermore, you will also be required to submit a Police Background Check report – stating that you hold no criminal records.
